Trains & Railways in Cádiz & Huelva

Route maps and booking information for the national rail service, regional trains and the urban train network: to help you find your way around Cadiz and Huelva provinces.

Below is information on public train transport in the Spanish provinces of Cádiz and Huelva with details on the regional rail network, booking tickets (types of ticket, discounts and reductions), taking bicycles on trains and travelling with animals. There is also a useful glossary of travel terms.

RENFE (La Red de los Ferrocarriles Españoles) is the Spanish national rail train service. Information in English is available on the RENFE website, including prices and times.

All seats on RENFE trains assigned, except on Cercanias trains. 

  • Cercanías is the RENFE commuter train network which operates in the major metropolitan areas in Spain, including Cádiz province
  • AVE (Alta Velocidad) is the RENFE high-speed, long-distance train network which operates from northern to southern Spain via Madrid. There is an AVE train that connects Madrid with Seville via Cuidad Real, Puertollano and Córdoba
  • Media Distancia and Avant are part of the regional train network operated by RENFE in each of the autonomous regions. Media Distancia service is provided via conventional local trains while Avant service is provided by high-speed trains. For information on the Andalucía rail area: Click here

Buying Train Tickets

Train tickets can be booked at a RENFE station, online through the RENFE website and through participating travel agents. Tickets purchased via the RENFE website (with the exception of Avant tickets) at least 60 days prior to the travel date are generally less expensive than tickets bought nearer or on the travel day.

To buy a ticket via the RENFE website

  • Customers must enter the first eight digits of their passport number, DNI or identification card on the form

Tickets are sold at most major train stations. Alternatively, tickets can be bought from authorised ticket agents.

Reductions and discounts

  • Rail Plus cards are non-transferable and entitle the cardholder to a 25 percent discount on rail travel in other European countries with certain train companies. There are two types of railcard available: one for people under 26 years; and one for those over 60 years of age. Identification and proof or residency are needed to buy and use a Rail Plus card
  • Children: Children under the age of 14 are eligible for discounted tickets
  • Large families: Families with more than 4 immediate members are eligible for a Familia Numerosa discount. Official proof of family status must be shown when purchasing tickets
  • Groups: Group larger than 10 people are also eligible for discounted tickets
  • Young adults: Travellers aged 12 to 25 are eligible for the Carnet Joven (Youth Ticket) offers  discount on all tickets on days classified as "blue"
  • Pensioners and people with disabilities: Pensioners over 60-years of age and people considered 65 percent or more disabled are eligible for the Tarjeta Dorada (Golden Card). One companion accompanying a traveller with disabilities is also eligible for the discount
  • Students: Students in Cadiz can obtain a Tarjeta Studio pass for unlimited travel within one to five zones on Cercanías trains
Bicycles on RENFE Trains

Bicycles may be taken on some RENFE trains. 

  • AVE trains: Bicycles are allowed on AVE trains that have sleeper cars and only when the passenger is travelling with a group and the group is occupying an entire sleeper carriage. The passenger must indicate when purchasing their ticket that they will be travelling with a bicycle. Only one bike is allowed per passenger. Each bicycle must be in a travel case with pedals and handlebars removed, and it must be stowed in an allocated space. Only two bicycles are allowed per car

  • Media Distancia trains: Bicycles are allowed on Media Distancia trains only when space permits or if there is a designated space for the bike. Trains may have a limit regarding the number of bikes allowed on board. Only one bike is allowed per passenger.Groups travelling with more than three bicycles must obtain prior permission from RENFE to travel

  • Cercanías: Bicycles are allowed on Cercanías trains only during specified times (usually at times of lower usage). Only one bike is allowed per passenger

The accompanying passenger is completely responsible for loading and unloading their bicycle on all RENFE trains.

Pets on RENFE Trains

Small dogs, cats and domestic animals may travel on RENFE trains as long as other passengers have no objections. One animal is allowed per accompanying passenger. The pet owner is responsible if their animal causes any damages or injuries. The following restrictions apply: 

  • AVE: Small animals (excluding farm animals) up to 6 Kg may travel with an accompanying human. A ticket must be purchased for the animal (at a discount). The animal must be in a container no larger than 65x35x35cm that is equipped to contain the animal's waste. The animal must have a health certificate from a veterinarian that states the animal is healthy. Animals are only allowed in sleeper cars if the entire car is occupied by the animal's accompanying human family
  • Media Distancia: Small animals (excluding farm animals) up to 6 Kg may travel with an accompanying human, if space allows. A ticket must be purchased for the animal (at a discount), though the animal may not occupy a seat. The animal must be in a container no larger than 65x35x35cm that is equipped to contain the animal's waste. The animal must have a health certificate from a veterinarian that states the animal is healthy
  • Cercanías: Small animals are permitted on most Cercanías trains, though animals may not be allowed at certain times. Enquire with RENFE for details. No ticket for the animal is required

Guide dogs for the blind are allowed free of charge on RENFE trains.

International Rail Passes
  • Inter Rail provides international train travel in Europe for European residents. Tickets are available only to European residents and are not transferable
    • Global Pass: good for travel through 30 European countries but not in the pass-holders country of residence. Two types, the Flexible Global Pass (good for limited non-consecutive days) and the Continuous Global Pass (good for consecutive travel days), are available for various validity periods. The Global Pass does entitle the holder to a discount on RENFE travel from their residence to the border station or airport
    • One Country Pass: good for travel in one European country but not in the pass-holders country of residence. Only a Flexible Pass is available
  • Eurail (often referred to as Euro Rail and Euro Rail) is an international train pass available to anyone who has lived in a non-European country for at least the last six months. There are four travel options available including the Eurail Global Pass, Eurail Select Pass, Eurail Regional Pass and Eurail One Country Pass
